personal encouragement and professional support of Dr Albrecht Frenz, to
whom we owe the familiarising of Kerala Studies in modern Germany. He
helped me to the Tuebingen University Library in 1986, and paved the way for
the chance discovery of invaluable Malayalam manuscripts. The organizing
commitee of Dr Hermann Gundert Conference 1993 and Dr Hermann Gundert
Foundation, Stuttgart deserve special thanks for their spirited interest and
whole-hearted support.

Prof. Dr Heinrich von Stietencron and his colleagues in the Department
of Indology, University of Tuebingen, have helped me in my sojourn through
words and deeds. Dr Michael von Hauff, Professor of Economics at the
University of Kaiserlautern has contributed a scholarly article on Indo-German
Economic Co-operation to volume 5 of TULMMS

The Gundert family, especially members of Steinhaus- Ms Gertraud
Frenz, and Ms Margret Frenz cheerfully aided me in my research work. Closer,
at home, I am grateful to quite a few eminent scholars: Prof. S Guptan Nair, Prof.
Dr M Leelavathy, Prof. Dr A P Andrewskutty, Prof. Dr M G S Narayanan and
Prof. Dr K M Prabhakara Variar who helped in various ways with the editing
of this series.

Three young research scholars, Joseph Skariah, P. Antony and Manoj
Kuroor shared the most difficult task of carefully copying down and analysing
these difficult texts. They even prepared the press copies of these volumes and
checked the proof sheets. A project like this could not have been executed
without the editorial assistance of many enthusiastic lovers of Malayalam. I
remember the following youngsters with gratitude: Susha Varghese, Rajalakshmi,
K. Vijayan, Murari Sambu, Aju Narayanan, Jaya Sukumaran, and my son Arul
George Scaria. The young journalist K. Balakrishnan (Desabhimani, Kannur)
has focussed public attention on these valuable works through his learned
articles. Rev. Dr. George Madathiparampil principal St Berchmans' College,
Prof P C Menon campus director SSUS Ettumanoor, Prof C G Rajagopal,
dean, Faculty of Indian Languages SSUS, Josy Joseph,a young English lecturer
of SB College, eminent cultural leader Murkot Ramunny and veteran publisher
DC Kizhakkemuri have provided the right kind of stimulation, support, advice
or expertise.
