14 INTRODUCTION TO THE HARMONY. CHAP. III.

singular expression, the following one, suggested by the late Prof. Dr. Krafft of Erlangen, and
adopted by Prof. Dr. Ebrard, appears to us to be the best and simplest:

"Sábbaton deuteróproton" must signify a Sabbath, which is the second of two first Sabbaths.
And of two such Sabbaths the Jews could only speak in contradistinction to a following third
one. Now, it was not until the month of Nisan (April), that the grains were ripening. Hence
the explanation of the term must be sought in connection with a peculiar cycle of Sabbaths
falling within this month Nisan. And here the Passover—weak at once presents itself for the
solution of the riddle. Whenever the 15th of Nisan, the principal day of the festival, fell on
any other day than Saturday or Sunday, the Passover—week included three Sabbaths, viz: I. the
15th of Nisan, which was observed as a real Sabbath, on whatever week—day it might fall. 1)

2. the usual weekly Sabbath. 3. the 21st of Nisan, celebrated as a real Sabbath. Now, con—
trasted with the 21st of Nisan the 15th of Nisan was the "first Sabbath" of the Passover, and
the 21st of Nisan, compared with the 15th, was the "second Sabbath." These two Sabbaths
returned regularly and unexceptionally year by year. But in such years, when in addition to
these two Sabbaths the usual weekly Sabbath too fell in the Pascal—week, it seemed natural
enough, to designate this intermediate Sabbath as the "second—first," rather than to call it the

With reference to the matter peculiar to Luke, the task remains of determining its time and
order of succession. And here it is, that, in the absence of clear and distinct dates, we must more
or less be guided by those "conjectures, founded on a careful comparison of all the circumstances."
There is but one Chain, to which we can assign its place just now, viz. Luke D (Jesus dining
with a Pharisee and anointed by a woman, who had been a sinner. And: Women ministering
unto Christ, while journeying, Luke 7. 36–8. 3). Nothing prevents us from considering these
events to have occurred during the continuation of the same circuit, on which Christ had come
to Nain (7. 11–17) and had subsequently received the Baptist's embassy (7. 18–35). We
therefore place Luke D immediately after the Comp.—Chain No. I.

1) The first and the last of the seven days of Passover, and likewise the first and the last of the eight
days of the feast of Tabernacles were observed as regular Sabbaths. See Lev. 23.
