൧ാം കഥ.
കാശിയിൽ ഒരു വിദ്വാൻ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവന്ന രണ്ട
കുമാരര-അവരിൽ മൂത്തവന്ന അവൻ തന്റെ നെട്ടം എല്ലാം
കൊടുത്തു-ഇളയവനെ വിദ്യ അഭ്യസിപ്പിച്ചു. മൂത്തവൻ കുറയ
ദിവസം കൊണ്ട തന്റെ പണം എല്ലാം വ്രയം ചെയ്ത ദരി
ദ്രൻ ആയി-ഇളയവൻ തന്റെ സാമൎത്ഥ്യം കൊണ്ട വളരെ
ധനം സമ്പാദിച്ച സുഖമായിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് വിദ്യ അഭ്യ
സിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവൻ സുഖപ്പെടും.
1st. STORY.
There lived at Benares a learned man, who had two sons, to
the eldest of whom he gave all his property, and the younger
he instructed in the arts and sciences. The former in a short
time spent the whole of his money and became poor; but the
latter acquired a large fortune by his abilities and lived happily.
Thus he who has studied will prosper.
കാശിയിൽ In Benares, 3rd abl. of കാശി Benares, s. n. ഒരു a or
one, num. but here the indefinite article. വിദ്വാൻ a learned man, s.
m. ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു there lived, 3d. p. sing. past tense of the compd.
neuter verb ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കുന്നു to live, to be. അവന്ന to him, dat.
sing of pron. അവൻ he. vide Grammar para. 60. രണ്ട two, num കു
മാരര sons, s. m. plu. of കുമാരൻ a son. അവരിൽ of them (lit. in
them).3d abl. plu. of അവൻ he. മൂത്തവന്ന to the elder, dat, sing.
of മൂത്തവൻ the elder man, lit. the great man. തന്റെ his own, gen.
sing. of the refl. pron. താൻ self. vide Grammar para. 60. നെട്ടം
wealth, property, s. n. here the nominative is used for the accusative.
