൧൯ാം കഥ,
ഒരു ബാലിഭൻ ഒരു കിണറ്റിൻ പക്കത്ത ഉച്ചത്തിൽ കര
ഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പൊൾ അവിടെ ഒരു കള്ളൻ വന്ന അവ
നെ നൊക്കി നീ എന്തിനാകുന്നു കരയുന്നത എന്ന ചൊദിച്ചു.
ഞാൻ ഇവിടെ കളിച്ചുകൊണ്ട ൟ കിണറ്റിലെക്ക കുനിഞ്ഞ
നൊക്കിയപ്പൊൾ എന്റെ കഴുത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന മുത്തമാല
ഊരി വെള്ളത്തിൽ വീണുപൊയി. ഇപ്പൊൾ ഞാൻ മാലയി
ല്ലാതെ വീട്ടിലെക്ക പൊയാൽ എന്നെ എന്റെ അമ്മയും അച്ഛ
നും അടിക്കും ഇതുകൊണ്ട കരയുന്നു എന്ന ആ ബാലിഭൻ പ
റത്തെപ്പൊൾ ആ കള്ളൻ അത തനിക്ക കയ്ക്കലാക്കി കൊണ്ട
പൊകണമെന്ന യൊജന ചെയ്ത എടൊ നീ ഭയപ്പെടെണ്ട
ഞാൻ കിണറ്റിൽ ഇറങ്ങി നിന്റെ മുത്തമാല എടുത്ത തരുന്നു
ണ്ട എന്റെ വസ്ത്രം മാത്രം നീ ഭദ്രമായി സൂക്ഷിക്ക എന്ന
പറഞ്ഞു. തന്റെ വസ്ത്രം വക്കത്ത വെച്ച നഗ്നമായി കിണ
റ്റിലെക്ക ഇറങ്ങി അവൻ വെള്ളത്തിൽ മുങ്ങുമ്പൊഴെക്ക ആ
ബാലൻ അവന്റെ വസ്ത്രം എടുത്തുകൊണ്ട മണ്ടിപ്പൊയി.
ആ കള്ളൻ ഏറനെരം തെരഞ്ഞിട്ടും മാല കിട്ടായ്കകൊണ്ട ക
രെക്ക കെറി നൊക്കുമ്പൊൾ ആ ചെക്കനെ എവിടെയും കാ
ണ്മാൻ ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു. അന്നെരം കള്ളനായിരിക്കുന്ന എന്നെ
ഒരു ചെക്കൻ പയറ്റിച്ചുവെല്ലൊ എന്ന വിചാരിച്ചു. ആയ്ത
കൊണ്ട എത്രതന്നെ സമൎത്ഥൻ എന്ന ഒരുത്തൻ തന്നെത്താൻ
നിനച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നാലും മറ്റുള്ളവര മൊശം പറ്റിച്ചുകളയും.
19th. STORY.
As a boy was sitting on the brink of a well crying bitterly,
a thief came there, and seeing him, asked him why he was
crying. He answered, as I was playing here I looked into
this well, when the necklace of pearls that was on my neck,
slipped off and fell into the water. Now, if I go home without
the necklace, my father and mother will beat me; on this ac-
count I am crying. The thief, thinking he would be able to
steal it, said to him “Dont be afraid my lad, I will go down
into the well and get your pearl necklace, do you only take
care of my clothes.” Having left his clothes on the bank, he
descended into the well naked. As soon as he had got to the
bottom, the boy took his clothes and ran away with them.
