21st. STORY.

In Madras lived an English gentleman who, as he knew no
other language than English, kept a dubash who was acquaint-
ed with all the languages that are spoken there. One day some
tumblers came to the gentleman, and having fixed their bamboo,
danced and displayed several feats of agility before him. The
gentleman, was highly gratified, and sending for his dubash,
told him to give them ten pagodas. The dubash took them to
his house, and giving them only one pagoda, told them to go
about their business. As they thought this a poor recompence
for their trouble, and suspected that the dubash had deceived
them, they returned to the gentleman, and shewing him the
pagoda, told him his dubash had given only it to them. As
the gentleman did not understand their language, he sent for
the dubash and asked him what they were saying. He told
him, that among the ten pagodas he had given them, they said
this pagoda was a bad one and they wanted him to exchange
it. The gentleman at this became very angry, and ordered
them to be well beaten and sent away. Thus, they who are
ignorant of the languages of the country they inhabit, and
believe what others tell them, must be guilty of great injustice.
