യുടെ അരികെ ആക്കി വെച്ച ചെറയിലെക്ക വെള്ളത്തിന്ന
പൊയി. അപ്പൊൾ ആ കുട്ടി ഉറങ്ങി കിടന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത ഒരു
പാമ്പ വന്നു തൽക്ഷണം ആ കിരി ആ പാമ്പിനെ പിടിച്ച
തുണ്ടം തുണ്ടമായി മുറിച്ച ആ ചൊരമയത്തൊടെ ആ സ്ത്രീയു
ടെ അടുക്കൽ പൊയി. അവൾ കീരിയുടെ ഭാവം കണ്ട ഇത ത
ന്റെ കുഞ്ഞിനെ കൊന്ന വന്നൂ എന്ന വെച്ച ദുഃഖപ്പെട്ട ബ
ഹു കൊപത്തൊടെ ഒരു വടി എടുത്ത അതിനെ അടിച്ച കൊ
ന്നു. പിന്നെ വീട്ടിൽ ചെന്ന നൊക്കുമ്പൊൾ കുഞ്ഞ തൊട്ടിയിൽ
കിടന്ന സുഖമായി ഉറങ്ങുന്നതും തൊട്ടിയുടെ അരികെ പാമ്പ
ചത്ത കിടക്കുന്നതും കണ്ട ഹാ ഞാൻ എത്ര പാപി എന്റെ കു
ഞ്ഞിന്റെ പ്രാണനെ രക്ഷിച്ച കീരിയെ അന്യായമായി കൊ
ന്നുവല്ലൊ എന്നവെച്ച പെരുത്ത വ്യസനിച്ചു.
24th. STORY.
There lived in the country of Palnaud, a Soodra, who had a
mongoose, which he was rearing with great care. One day
being obliged by business to go to another country, he gave it
in charge to his wife and set out on his journey. The day after
his departure, his wife put her son to sleep in a cradle, and
having placed the mongoose near it, went to a tank to fetch
some water. A snake just at that time came to the place
where the child was sleeping, which the mongoose immediatly
tore in pieces, and then covered with blood went out to meet
the woman. The woman seeing the mongoose in this state,
began to cry bitterly, imagining that it had killed her son, and
in a fit of rage she seized a stick and killed it on the spot.
But when she entered the house and saw the infant in a tran-
quil slumber and the snake lying dead near it she exclaimed
in a fit of despair, O wretch that I am I have killed the pro-
tector of my child’s life.
പല്നാട Palnaud, a district, in the northern circars. കീരി a mon-
goose, s. n. താല്പൎയ്യമായി carefully, adv. തറ a place, a Village, s. n.
പൊകെണ്ടുന്ന പണി business which obliged him to go, compd. of
പൊക the root of പൊകുന്നു to go, വെണ്ടുന്ന which is necessary,
and പണി business. ഭാൎയ്യ wife, s.f. വശം in charge of, post pos. എ
ല്പിക്കുന്നു to deliver, v. a. പിറ്റെനാൾ the next day, the day after.
അച്ചി wife, s.f. ആണ്കുഞ്ഞ a male child, s. m. തൊട്ടി cradle, s. n.
