ഗൊദാവരി തീരത്ത ഒരു ആല ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു ആ മര
ത്തിന്മെൽ പഞ്ചവൎണ്ണകിളികൾ കൂടുകൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കി ബഹുനാളാ
യി അവകളിൽ തങ്ങളുടെ കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെ പൊഷിച്ചുംകൊണ്ടി
രുന്നു. വൃശ്ചിക മാസത്തിൽ ഒരുനാൾ നന്നായി മഴപെയ്തു.
അപ്പൊൾ ആ ആറ്റരികത്തുള്ള കുരങ്ങുകൾ എല്ലാം കുളുൎന്ന വി
റച്ച ആ മരത്തിന്റെ കീഴെ വന്നു. അപ്പൊൾ അതിന്മെൽ ഉ
ള്ള പഞ്ചവൎണ്ണക്കിളികൾ ൟ കുരങ്ങന്മാരെ നൊക്കി നിങ്ങൾക്ക
ദൈവം കൈ കാൽ തന്നിട്ടുണ്ടെല്ലൊ നിങ്ങൾക്ക മഴകൊണ്ട
അസഹ്യം ഉണ്ടാകാതെയിരിപ്പാൻ ഒരു വീട ഉണ്ടാക്കിക്കൂടെ
യൊ ഇനി എങ്കിലും ഞങ്ങളുടെ വാക്ക കെട്ട ൟ മഴനിന്ന
ശെഷം ഒരു വീട ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നതിന്ന ആരംഭിപ്പിൻ എന്നപറ
ഞ്ഞപ്പൊൾ തങ്ങളെ പുച്ഛിച്ചാകുന്നു കിളികൾ ൟ വാക്ക പറ
ഞ്ഞത എന്ന ശങ്കിച്ച മഴനിന്ന ശെഷം കുരങ്ങുകൾ എല്ലാം
ആ മരത്തിന്മെൽ കെറി കിളികളുടെ കൂടുകളെ വലിച്ച പറിച്ച
കളഞ്ഞ അവയുടെ കുഞ്ഞങ്ങളെ കൊല്ലുകയും ചെയ്തു.

On the banks of the river Godavery there was a banian tree,
on which, for a length of the time, parrots had built their nests
and brought up their young ones. One day in the month of
November, a violent shower of rain happening to fall, all the
monkies that inhabited the banks of that river retired, shiver-
