to know, says the king, what these owls are saying, pray listen
to their discourse, and give me an account of it. The vizier
approached the tree and pretended to be very attentive. On
his return, the king asked him what he had heard; he replied,
that he did not dare to tell him. The king would not be satis-
fied with this answer, but insisted upon hearing what the owls
had said. You must know then, said the vizier, that one
of these owls has a son and the other a daughter, between
whom they are now upon a treaty of marriage. The father of
the son said to the father of the daughter, I consent to the
marriage, provided you settle fifty ruined villages upon your
daughter for her portion. To this the other replied, instead of
fifty I will give her five hundred if you please; for, thank God,
as long as Sultan Mahummud reigns over us, we shall never
want ruined villages; The Sultan was so touched with this
story, that he rebuilt the villages which had been destroyed,
and ever afterwards consulted the good of his people.
അറബി Arabia, s. n. അന്യദെശം a foreign country, s. n. യു

നാശമാകുന്നു to be destroyed, v. n. from നാശം destruction and ആ
കുന്നു to become. ഋഷി a sage, s. m. പക്ഷിഭാഷ the language of birds,
s. n. മൂങ്ങ an owl, s. n. എന്താണ what? what sort of thing? Intero-
gative pron. ഇഛ desire, wish, s. n. ശ്രദ്ധകൊടുക്കുന്നു to pay atten-
tion. പൊരാ insufficient, adj. ആയ്ത പൊരാ that is not sufficient.
എന്നാൽ if so, lit. but. ആണ്കുഞ്ഞ a male child. പെങ്കുഞ്ഞ a female
child. അമ്പത fifty, num. ക്ഷയിച്ച ഗ്രാമം a destroyed village, compd.
of ക്ഷയിച്ച past verb. part. of ക്ഷയിക്കുന്നു to be destroyed, and ഗ്രാ
മം a village, s. n. സമ്മതിക്കുന്നു to consent, v. n. പാഴ desolate, waste,
adj. കുറച്ചിൽ deficiency. s. n അഞ്ഞൂറ five hundred, num. വ്യസ
നാക്രാന്തനാകുന്നു to be overcome with grief, v. n. വീണ്ടും again.
നന്നാക്കിക്കുന്നു to make good, cause to re-establish, repair, v. a.
