themselves from the constant fear in which they were kept of his
approach, the beasts made a proposal of supplying him with
one animal every day, if he would promise not to attack them
any more. This agreement was entered into, and punctually
performed for some time on both sides. At last it fell to the
lot of a Jackall to be sent to the lion, who by no means relish-
ing the idea of being made a meal of, walked slowly along,
meditating on some contrivance to kill the lion and save his
own life. The lion finding the animal did not arrive at the
prescribed hour, became greatly enraged, and insisted on know-
ing the cause of the delay; upon which the Jackall thus
addressed him, “O Sir, a brother Jackall was despatched by the
beasts under my charge as a meal for you, but on the road
hither I encountered another lion, who took away your food,
and told me I might come and tell you of it.” The lion upon
hearing this, ordered him instantly to conduct him to the place
where his enemy was. The artful Jackall took him to the side
of a well, and telling him that the other lion was in it, begged
him to take him up in his arms, that he might also have a look
at him. When the lion saw in the water the reflection of him-
self, with the Jackall in his arms, he immediately concluded
that it was his enemy devouring his food, and having dropped
the Jackall, he made a furious leap into the well and instantly
perished. Thus, we should destroy our powerful enemies by
stratagem.
