tance to the next village, where he proposed to halt for the
night. The boy replied, look at me, at the cattle I am feeding,
the forest, and the sun, and your question will be answered,
for if the village was not very near, would such a young boy
as I am, be feeding so many cattle near a forest at this time of
day. From this sensible reply, the Brahmin formed a high
opinion of the boy’s abilities, and following him home, he told
his father that the lad was too clever to be employed in feeding
cows, and requested that he might be allowed to take him with
his other disciples to Benares, where he would educate him.
To this the father consented, and the lad afterwards turned out
a very shining character.
സകല all, adj. ശാസ്ത്രം a science, s. n. സമൎത്ഥനായ clever,
adj. ശിഷ്യൻ a pupil, s. m. കാശിയാത്ര a pilgrimate to Kashe,
(Benares) യാത്ര a pilgrimage, s. n. പുറപ്പെടുന്നു to set out v. n. ഉ
ച്ച noon. ഉച്ചതിരിയുന്നു lit. the noon to turn. അസ്തമിപ്പാറായ

ഒരു രാജാവിന്റെ അടുക്കൽ രണ്ട ആശ്രിതന്മാര ഉണ്ടാ
യിരുന്നു അവരിൽ ഒരുത്തൻ ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ ഒരുത്തൻ മാപ്പി
ള ആ രാജാവ അവൎക്ക നിത്യവും സമ്മാനങ്ങൾ കൊടുത്ത വ
രാറുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട അവൎക വെണ്ടതൊക്കയും ഉ
ണ്ടായി സുഖത്തൊട കാലം കഴിച്ച വന്നു. ഒരുനാൾ രാജാവ
അവരെ നൊക്കി നിങ്ങൾ ഇപ്രകാരം സൌഖ്യം അനുഭവി
ക്കുന്നത ആരുടെ ദയകൊണ്ട എന്ന ചൊദിച്ചു. അതിന്ന ആ
ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ ഇനിക്ക പ്രഭുവായിരിക്കുന്ന നിങ്ങളുടെ ദയകൊ
ണ്ട സുഖമായിരിക്കുന്നു എന്ന പറഞ്ഞു മാപ്പിള ദൈവത്തി
ന്റെ ദയകൊണ്ടാണ ഇനിക്ക സൌഖ്യമുണ്ടായിരിക്കുന്നത
എന്ന പറഞ്ഞു. രാജാവ ഇവര പറഞ്ഞ വാക്ക പരീക്ഷിക്കെ
ണമെന്ന വിചാരിച്ച ഒരു മത്തങ്ങ നിറയ മുത്തിട്ട അത ബ്രാഹ്മ
