94 A GRAMMAR OF THE
This verb, used singly, is confined to its primitive signification, but
when added to a principal word it sometimes answers to our words am,
ing; though in general it is merely intensive; as,
അവൻ ആ വെല എടുത്തുകൊള്ളുന്നു.
He is doing that work.
ഞാൻ നിന്നെ ദിവസംതൊറും പഠിപ്പിച്ചുകൊള്ളാം.
I will teach you every day.
ഞങ്ങളെ രക്ഷിച്ചുകൊള്ളെണമെ. Pray save us.
2nd. കളയുന്നു present, കളഞ്ഞു past, കളയും future, to cast away.
When used with a principal verb it signifies away, out; denoting
completeness; as,
അവൻ അവനെ തള്ളികളയുന്നു.
He pushes him out.
അവർ അത മൂടികളഞ്ഞു.
They covered it up completely.
അവൻ അവളെ ആട്ടികളയും.
He will drive her away.
3rd. കിടക്കുന്നു, to lie down. When added to other verbs, it is merely
intensive.
It is seldom used in this sense, except in the present tense, and requires
neuter verbs; as,
എഴുതികിടക്കുന്നു. It is written.
ൟ മുണ്ട കീറികിടക്കുന്നു. This cloth is torn.
4th. തരുന്നു, കൊടുക്കുന്നു, to give. Whether these are used as
principal, or auxiliary verbs; the first form must always be employed
with reference to the first and second person; and the latter when speak-
ing to, or of the third person.
Added to principal verbs they are merely intensive; as,
അവൻ ഇനിക്ക ചൊല്ലിതരുന്നു.
He is teaching me.
ഞാൻ അവന്ന അത ചെയ്തകൊടുത്തു.
I did that for him.
ഞാൻ നിനക്ക കാട്ടി തരാം
I will shew you.
