3rd. To denote completeness ഉള്ളു is added to the final verb, and an
എ inserted before the last letter of മാത്രം; thus,
ൟ പശു മാത്രമെ ജീവനൊടെ ശെഷിക്കുന്നുള്ളു.
This cow only remains alive.
ആലപ്പുഴനിന്ന കൊണ്ടുവന്ന ആടുകളിൽ ഒന്ന മാത്രമെ
ചത്തുള്ളു.
Only one of the sheep that were brought from Allepie died.
Sometimes മാത്രം is understood, and the എ is joined to a noun in the
sentence, or to the verb that precedes ഉള്ളു; thus,
ഇനിക്ക ഒന്നെ ഉള്ളു. I have only one.
ഇത ചെയ്തെ ഉള്ളു. I did this only.
166. എങ്കിൽ. This particle is invariably affixed to verbs in any
tense as,
1st. To denote the English substantive with if; thus,
താൻ ആ മനുഷ്യന്റെ പുത്രനാകുന്നു എങ്കിൽ അപ്രകാ
രം പറയെണം.
if you are that man's son, say so.
ഇപ്രകാരം വെണം എങ്കിൽ പൊകെണം.
If it must be so, go.
അവൻ അപ്രകാരം കല്പിച്ചു എങ്കിൽ നീ അപ്രകാരം
ചെയ്യെണം.
If he did so command, you must do so.
ഞാൻ ഇതിനെ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ എന്നൊട ക്ഷമിക്കെ
ണമെ.
If I have done this, forgive me.
അവർ നമ്മുടെ പക്ഷത്തിൽ ആയിരുന്നു എങ്കിൽ ന
മ്മൊട കൂടിയിരിക്കുമായിരുന്നു.
If they had been of our party, they would have joined us.
2nd. എങ്കിൽ. Affixed to negative verbs, corresponds to unless, if
not; as,
താൻ ഇനിക്ക സഹായിക്കുന്നില്ല എങ്കിൽ അത ചെയ്വാൻ
ഇനിക്ക കഴികയില്ല.
I cannot do it unless you assist me.
