town in summer and in winter. His wife is very much
displeased with this change; for she was always more
happy in the country than in town. When our physician
died, his family was in great distress. After his death
his wife was obliged to go with her children into the coun-
try, where they are supported by some relations.

The tailor has made me a new coat, but it does not
fit me; he must alter it. How do you like this waist-
coat? It is very pretty, but I think it is a little too tight;
I fear it will soon get dirty.

The lion is called the king of animals, on account of
his stately appearance. His greatest ornament is the
beautiful mane on his neck. The lioness is less beautiful
principally, because her neck is not adorned with such a
mane. The fox is proverbial on account of his cunning.

In a field of ripe corn a lark had a brood of young
ones. When she went out to find some food for them, she
ordered them to take notice of what should happen in her
absence. On her return they told her that the owner of
the field had been there, and had requested his neighbours
to reap his corn. The lark then said there was no danger
yet. The next day the lark flew out again, and when she
returned. The young larks told her, that the owner of
the field had been there again, and had asked some of his
friends to mow his corn for him. There is no danger in
that either, replied the lark, and went out for provisions
as before. But when on the following day she was informed
that the owner and his son would come and do the work
themselves, she said that it was now time to look out for
another place, and immediately retired with her young
ones into a neighbouring meadow.
