THE PRESENT TENSE FINITE.

110. How is the present tense formed?

The present tense is formed by adding the present
affix 'unnu'* to the root, or in case of strong verbs
to the strengthened root.

Ex: pókunnu, varunnu, valikkunnu.

111. What is the form of the present shewing the three
persons?

As follows:

Weak verbs.
Gender 3rd Person 2nd Person 1st Person
Singular. Masculine kúṭunnán (= he, she, it joins) kúṭunnáya
(=thou joinest)
kúṭunnén
(= I join)
Feminine kúṭunnáḷ
Neuter kúṭunnatu
Strong Verbs.
Gender 3rd Person 2nd Person 1st Person
Plural. Mas. kuṭikkunnár (= they drink) kuṭikkunnír
(= you drink)
kuṭikkunnam
(= we drink)
Fem.
Neu. kuṭikkunnva

* The present affix was anciently 'innu'; it is still found in the
negative verb.
