114. Are there (1.) any dubious cases and (2.) any irre-
gularities in the case of the above classes of verbs,
in relation to the formation of their past tenses?
There are many, particularly in the case of crude-forms
ending in r, l, ḷ.
Ex:
Crude-form | Past in 'i' | Past in 'tu' |
1. kollu (kill) | kolli | konnu |
chollu (=say) | cholli | chonnu |
cháru (= lean) | chári | chárnnu |
2. áḷu | áṇḍu | |
varaḷ (=dry up) | varaṇṭu
íru (saw) | írnnu | |
póru (=accompany) | pónnu
uṇ (=eat) | uṇṭu | |
tin (eat) | tinnu | |
koḷḷu (take) | koṇḍu | |
akalu (=be distant) | akannu |
N. B. In speaking of verbal roots the half 'u' at the end is not
considered to form a syllable, the consonant preceding it is
considered part of the preceding syllable.
