sentiment, it is truly gratifying to welcome such a literary production as the one before us. It is a matter for profound delight that, in the present case, it is a female intellect that puts as in mind of the glory of our literary ancestry.
The poem before us is worthy of every praise coming as it does from the pen of a member of the soft sex. The subject of
it is the well-know story of Arjuna's marriage with Subhadra -- a story that has been handled in various forms by many a Sanskrit and Malayalam poet. Though there is nothing in the subject with which an ordinary scholar is not already familiar, still the skilful way in which the story is developed in its dramatic garo is certainly creditabe.
The cheif merit of this poem lies in its etreme purity of thought and elegance of diction. The style is graceful, and the
language employed is, generally speaking, idiomatic. The deliniation of character and incident is true to nature, and the pourtrayal of human sentiments in its varying phases betokens a poetic capacity of no mean order. Judged by the severe canons of dramatic art, this little work is perhaps not free from blemishes, but against this must be set off the lyrical and metrical beauty of the poem which is certainly great. It is to be hoped that this gifted authoress will long continue to embellish the literarure of Malabar, by the productions of her fertile pen, so as to render the literary reputation of Kerala, a subject of pride to its well-wishers.
